Travel Sax 2
Below are some common questions about our Travel Sax
What mouthpiece size works with the Travel Sax 2?
You can use a Soprano, Alto, Tenor or Baritone mouthpiece. The Travel Sax works with a standard Alto mouthpiece, but we have designed 3 adaptors (Soprano, Tenor and Baritone) so you can use any mouthpiece you like.
Can the mouthpiece control pitch or vibrato?
Not yet. Probably in future Travel Sax versions.
How many octaves can the Travel Sax 2 play?
Right now three octaves. A Travel Sax has a normal saxophone range so from Bb3 to F#6.
Does it recognize alternate fingerings or altissimo fingerings?
Yes, we have programmed some of the main altissimo fingerings. We think that it’s a pretty useful tool to have. It’s great to be able to peacefully learn and practice the high register with your Travel Sax.
Nevertheless, be aware that some of the usual fingerings used in this range are not programed because of the Travel Sax key’s restrictions (some keys are mechanically linked and share the same movement).
Is this a MIDI interface?
Yes, indeed!
How do I control the volume while blowing?
Travel Sax has a pressure sensor that detects the blowing intensity and instantly determines the correct volume level.
Pressure MIN defines the minimum pressure at which a note will begin to sound (from 0 to 3). Pressure MAX sets the pressure point at which the loudest dynamic is triggered. By customizing both, you can better tailor the response of the Travel Sax 2.
If I blow through a regular mouthpiece how can it not produce intrusive sound from the reed?
It’s due to the air flow. The internal circuit that guides the air though the Travel Sax is much smaller compared to a standard saxophone preventing the reed vibrating and producing sound.
Does it come with any voices? Which saxophone or other instrument voices come with it?
Right now we have Alto, Tenor and Soprano saxophone tones in our App. We are working on other saxophone sounds too. The cool thing is that if you want the sound of other instruments you can use other apps such as Garage Band, Ableton Live and many more.
Please note that the internal sounds of the Travel Sax 2 were recorded note by note from an acoustic saxophone played by a professional saxophonist. This meticulous process can lead to slight variations in intensity between notes, as it's challenging to achieve perfectly identical performances. While not absolutely perfect, this approach contributes to a more realistic sound, which is our intended goal. For optimal quality and clarity, we advise limiting the volume to a maximum of 80%. Higher volumes may cause some distortion due to the current 5-layer sound firmware.
For those seeking a high-quality sound, we recommend using SWAM (or similar software). It pairs seamlessly with the Travel Sax 2, providing a wonderful sound experience.
Can I professionally perform with the Travel Sax 2 as I would with a standard saxophonne or wind controller? If not, what are the limitations?
The idea is to launch Travel Sax as a tool for practicing, but our goal is to get to the PRO-Level. Ideally you should be able to perform live without any problems. We are working really hard to get to that point so that we can say 100% confident, yes. We are improving right now the sensors so professional players can feel that a the travel Sax is also a performance tool.
What is the latency?
Really low (8-10ms) if you use Bluetooth connection, and 0ms if you use USB connection to your computer.
What do I have to do if the Travel Instruments app doesn't sound as expected when I play my Travel Sax?
Please open the Travel Sax app and tap the “Effects” button. Then modify the Buffer Size to Low, Mid or High until you get a good quality sound.
How do I charge my TS2 device and how long does the battery last?
To charge your TS2, connect it to your computer or use a mobile phone charger. Even if the LED lights do not illuminate, the device is still charging.
Allow a couple of hours for a full charge. When the device is fully charged, all four LEDs will light up upon powering it on for use.
There's no need to power the device off and on or unplug it during the charging process. Simply allow it to charge for a couple of hours.
When in use, the battery life is typically 4-5 hours, which can vary depending on the intensity of use. To maximize battery life, we suggest disabling Bluetooth when you are not actively using it for playing, as this feature consumes a significant amount of energy.
How to clean your Travel Sax?
To properly clean and dry your Travel Sax, always leave it standing upright or as straight as possible after use. You can keep it out of its case to prevent moisture buildup and use the provided towel to dry the exterior.
Important cleaning precautions:
- Do not use water to wash the Travel Sax It contains electronic components that can be damaged by water.
- Never insert anything into the internal conduit. This can cause damage. The inner tube is completely isolated from the electronics.
- Unlike acoustic saxophones, the Travel Sax does not have an internal drying and cleaning system.
Please note that the inner tube of the TS2 is completely watertight and made from an antibacterial material also used for surgical purposes.
